Rowan Williams stepping down as Archbishop of Canterbury.

16 March 2012

Rowan Williams,The Archbishop of Canterbury, has announced this morning that he has accepted the position of Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, with effect from January 2013. He will accordingly be stepping down as Archbishop of Canterbury at the end of December. The text of Archbishop Rowan’s announcement is here. There was also a good article in the New York Times this morning.

I for one am a little saddened by this news. Rowan Williams has exhibited all the virtues of a spiritual leader, the position afforded him in the Communion. In our ‘political’ world he has been under constant fire for being just that. In a strange manner, his drawing the ire of partisans on the left and the right speaks more about such people than about Archbishop Rowan.

The out going Archbishop says that “I think that it is a job of immense demands and I would hope that my successor has the constitution of an ox and the skin of a rhinoceros, really.”
