William James on being afraid of poverty.

28 September 2011

“We have grown literally afraid to be poor. We despise anyone who elects to be poor in order to simplify and save his inner life. If he does not join the general scramble and pant with the money-making street, we deem him spiritless and lacking in ambition.”

- William James

I hear a wall of angry noise from the Republican peanut gallery about the 47,000,000 people who don’t pay income tax.
    So What?

Most of these people are not loafers who enjoy poverty as the Republican would suggest.

These are people who are elderly, disabled, students and the poor who can’t earn enough money in our system to owe income tax.

I know single mothers who have three children, work two low paying jobs to try and make ends meet. People like this don’t pay income tax simply because they don’t earn enough to live on.
So why do you hate them?

Elderly widows, living on a minimum Social Security check barely have enough to eat.
Do you republicans want to take away their food?

My explanation is that republicans pick up on a slogan such as this from Limbaugh, Beck or Fox and began chanting it like a pack of animals baying at the full moon.

Why do you think that they have such disdain for those on the lowest rung of the economic ladder?
