Glenn Beck and the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Glenn Beck has, this past weekend, been portraying himself in almost messianic terms as an instrument of God prepared to lead America out of its spiritual darkness. By his own words and the timing of his rally in Washington D.C. he seems to be trying to hijack the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and take it in a very novel direction indeed. Beck claims he just wants to take the movement back. As if the Civil Rights Movement began as one of white, affluent, Republicans.
Instead of Beck’s fear mongering, listen instead to this historic speech, delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. 47 years ago, in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently called forth the better angels of our nature:
