H.L Mencken on Liturgy
24 February 2010
H.L Mencken once wrote that “A solemn high mass must be a thousand times as impressive to a man with any genuine religious sense…as the most powerful sermon ever roared under the big top by a Presbyterian auctioneer of God.”
I agree and wouldn’t trade a single Sunday Liturgy for an hour or two of the most brilliant Scriptural exegesis or moral exhortation. Yet for all it’s beauty it would be useless if it did not serve to lead those taking part in it to a more perfect imitation of Christ.
